{"id":3988,"date":"2023-01-25T14:24:15","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T13:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.combell.nl\/en\/help\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=3988"},"modified":"2024-12-11T15:23:59","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T14:23:59","slug":"wildcard-dns-records-have-specific-rules","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.combell.nl\/en\/help\/kb\/wildcard-dns-records-have-specific-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildcard DNS records have specific rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you use a wildcard DNS record, then special rules apply to the creation of new DNS records that fall under that wildcard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a wildcard DNS record, you ensure that every subdomain of your domain name is covered by your DNS record.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Wildcard DNS record: *.ninefortwo.be<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Consequence<\/strong>: every subdomain of <strong>ninefortwo.be<\/strong> falls under this wildcard (e.g. <strong>blog.ninefortwo.be<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Create your own exceptions for certain labels that should not be included. For example, if you create <strong>app.ninefortwo.be<\/strong>, it will not be covered by the above wildcard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon is-style-info\">A label is the bit before your domain name, separated by dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beware-if-you-use-more-than-one-label\">Beware if you use more than one label!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you create a DNS record with multiple labels, the labels that are not explicitly created are implicitly added by our DNS platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Example of DNS record with two labels: app.blog.ninefortwo.be<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Consequence<\/strong>: <strong>blog.ninefortwo.be<\/strong> is also automatically created as an empty DNS record.
